Activities From Ouirgane

Ouirgane

Just an hour or so from Marrakech, Ouirgane is an increasingly popular escape into the peaceful foothills of the High Atlas. Surrounded by lush green valleys, deep-red hillsides, fragrant pine forests and traditional Berber villages, it makes a wonderful place to slow the pace and experience a quieter side of Morocco.

Ouirgane is particularly well placed for a relaxing night or two after trekking in the Toubkal region, but it is also a destination in its own right. Spend your days walking through orchards and mountain villages, exploring by mountain bike or riding on horseback through the beautiful surrounding countryside. With spectacular scenery in every direction, it is an ideal addition to a Morocco adventure holiday.

Day Walks from Ouirgane

Tassa Ouirgane Day Walk

This beautiful walk from Ouirgane begins through fertile farmland and colourful wildflowers, following the river valley before entering gently rolling hills covered with open woodland. The trail passes through isolated Berber hamlets and continues towards the traditional salt mines at Marigha, where salt is still transported by donkey to neighbouring villages.

From here, the route continues into the Tassa Ouirgane Valley, passing orchards and the impressive Takherkhourte forest. We normally stop for a picnic in the village of Tassa, where magnificent panoramic views stretch across the valley towards the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for Barbary sheep before continuing through the woodland, with views towards the Toubkal Massif and the distant High Atlas peaks.

The trail then descends through the hills before crossing the river and following a small path on the opposite side of the valley. We walk through stands of juniper and fir towards the foothills of Adrar Takherkhourte (2,309m), before returning to Ouirgane through orchards and vineyards and the villages of Tourourd and El Khémis.

Tinzert Day Walk

This rewarding walk heads south from Ouirgane along traditional mule tracks beside a saline stream, passing through the village of Marigha Izdern (1,205m) before reaching Imareghan Noufla (1,224m). The area is renowned for its intensely flavoured olive oil, traditionally produced using old stone equipment powered by mules and donkeys.

With Adrar Takherkhourte (2,660m) rising dramatically to the right, we continue through a beautiful landscape of cultivated fields, wildflowers and olive groves, passing several traditional Berber hamlets on the way to Tinzert. Here, salt is extracted from deep wells, with the resulting brine left to evaporate naturally in open salt pans.

The return route crosses the Tizi n’Tarabza Pass (1,706m), where superb views open across the Tarabaza, Kik and Moulay Brahim plateaus, with the Tizi n’Test Pass and Jbel Oukaïmeden visible beyond. It is a wonderfully varied day of walking, combining mountain scenery, Berber culture and the fascinating traditional industries of the region.

Mountain Biking from Ouirgane

Just an hour from Marrakech, the peaceful Ouirgane Valley provides a spectacular setting for a private mountain biking adventure. Surrounded by timeless Berber villages, red-earth valleys, pine forests and rugged High Atlas foothills, this is a chance to experience a quieter and more authentic side of Morocco away from the main tourist routes.

Our cycling adventure begins at the beautiful traditional Villa Ouirgane before climbing approximately 7km towards a small, secluded mountain village, where we meet a friendly local Berber guide. Our first stop is the village of Tinzert, where you can enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast of freshly baked bread, fragrant olive oil, local eggs and classic Moroccan mint tea.

Breakfast is served with magnificent views across Lake Asni-Ouirgane towards Mount Toubkal and the surrounding High Atlas Mountains. After time to relax and take in the scenery, we continue downhill towards a beautiful plateau enclosed by dramatic red-earth gorges.

The route combines quiet roads and off-road trails, taking us through the peaceful countryside surrounding Ouirgane. Along the way, experience the rugged foothills of the High Atlas, clear mountain streams, fragrant pine woodland and traditional salt mines hidden among the valleys.

The ride takes approximately 3–4 hours and finishes back at Villa Ouirgane, where you can relax and enjoy the comfort of your room after an exhilarating day exploring the Atlas Mountains by bike.
