3 Days Trekking Toubkal & The Azzaden Valley

A Moroccan Adventure Awaits

From €200

3 Day Azzaden & Mountain Adventure

The 3-Day Toubkal Round Trek is an exhilarating and scenic adventure through Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, designed for trekkers who want to explore the landscapes surrounding Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 metres. Unlike the standard Toubkal summit trek, this route takes you on a loop around the mountain, offering diverse views, picturesque Berber villages and challenging yet rewarding hiking.

Difficulty Level

The Toubkal Round Trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude, with the highest pass reaching around 3,600 metres, as well as the rugged terrain and length of each day’s walking. You should have some previous trekking experience and a good level of fitness to tackle this trek. While it does not involve technical climbing, the terrain can be steep and rocky, particularly at higher altitudes.

Key Highlights

  • Toubkal Massif: Enjoy incredible views of the highest peak in North Africa from different perspectives.

  • Berber Villages: Trek through traditional Berber villages and experience the culture, architecture and hospitality of local communities.

  • Scenic Passes: Cross Tizi n’Agelzim and Tizi n’Mzik, two spectacular mountain passes offering impressive views across the Atlas Mountains.

  • Remote Wilderness: Explore relatively remote mountain regions and experience the natural beauty and tranquillity of the High Atlas.

This trek runs all year round and can depart on any date of your choice.
We usually have several treks departing each week that you can join if you wish, so please get in touch!

Route Details

Day 01

Marrakech - Imlil - Azib n Tamsoult

Transfer from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains, with a 1 hour 30-minute drive to Imlil (1,740m), a famous starting point for mountain and trekking adventures. Discover the area before hiking up to Tizi n’Mzik Mountain Pass (2,489m), enjoying spectacular views across the Imlil area and Azzaden Valley.

Enjoy a field lunch prepared by our cook in the middle of a juniper forest. After lunch, continue walking down the Azzaden Valley to the summer village of Tamssoult (2,250m). Overnight in the refuge or camp. Approx. 5 hours walking.

Day 02

Azib n Tamsoult  - Agelzim Mountain pass - Toubkal Base camp

Today involves a fairly stiff climb out of the Azzaden Valley to the Toubkal Refuge, via the Ighouliden Waterfalls and over the Aguelzim Mountain Pass at 3,560m. Lunch will be taken with spectacular views across the Atlas Mountain Range.

Overnight at the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Hut or Mouflon), where you’ll likely share a dormitory with other trekkers preparing to climb Toubkal early the following morning. Approx. 7 hours walking.

Day 03

Toubkal base camp - Toubkal Summit - Toubkal base camp -- Imlil -- Marrakech

Set off early for the climb to the summit of Toubkal (4,167m), where, weather permitting, you’ll enjoy wonderful views across the High Atlas Range and towards the Sahara Desert. From the summit, begin the long descent, passing the refuge and following the well-worn trail back to Imlil.

This is a fairly long day, with around 8–9 hours of trekking, involving approximately 900m of ascent followed by almost 2,500m of descent to Imlil. You will normally arrive back in Marrakech at around 5:00pm.

Note: This itinerary is a guideline and may be changed to suit local conditions.

Equipment

Please ensure you have packed all safety essentials. See the Equipment List here if you're unsure of what to bring. Our guides will conduct a final gear check in Imlil before we commence the ascent to the higher altitudes of the Toubkal massif.

What Is Appropriate Attire In Morocco?

Morocco is a conservative and religious country, which means you always need to be mindful of your clothing choices. This is especially true in the country’s more rural areas, which include the Sahara Desert and its surrounding villages. As a general rule of thumb, you should always attempt to cover body parts considered “private”. For women, this means covering the arms (or at least the shoulders) and the knees up. For men, it requires covering up the shoulders and above the knee.
