Beyond the bustling souks and historic sights of Marrakech lies a completely different side of Morocco. Within around an hour of the city, the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains open into beautiful green valleys, traditional Berber villages and spectacular mountain landscapes, making them ideal for a day trip from Marrakech.
Marrakech is perfectly positioned for exploring the Atlas Mountains, with the Imlil, Ourika and Zat Valleys offering a wide range of experiences. From gentle walks through Berber villages and scenic mountain drives to more active hikes and cultural excursions, there are plenty of ways to discover this fascinating region and experience rural Morocco away from the city.
Of course, there is plenty to enjoy in Marrakech itself, from exploring the Medina and haggling for bargains in the colourful souks to listening to storytellers in Djemaa el Fna and enjoying traditional Moroccan food. But when you’re ready to venture further afield, the High Atlas Mountains provide a wonderful opportunity to experience a quieter and more authentic side of Morocco.

Pick Up & Drop Off
You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech city, many riads don't have access via car so the driver will park nearby and come to get you.
You will be dropped off at the nearest point to your riad/hotel. Our driver can call your riad to meet you if needed.

Day 01
Marrakech - Atlas Mountains
Discover the laid-back coastal charm of Essaouira, a beautiful former Portuguese port town set on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Built around a rocky peninsula overlooking the ocean, Essaouira is known for its whitewashed buildings, distinctive blue shutters, historic ramparts and spectacular sea views. Known as Mogador until the 18th century, the town still retains fascinating traces of its Portuguese heritage and maritime past.
The Beach: Essaouira’s long sandy beach is famous for its strong Atlantic winds, making it a popular destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing and other water sports. The conditions attract experienced surfers and sailing enthusiasts from around the world.
The Port: Built in the 18th century, Essaouira’s historic fishing port remains one of the liveliest parts of the town. Watch colourful fishing boats returning from the Atlantic as freshly caught fish is brought ashore and sold at auction, creating a wonderfully authentic atmosphere.
The Skala: Built as part of the town’s historic defensive system, the Skala overlooks the Atlantic and features a line of old European bronze cannons that once protected Essaouira from attacks by sea. Today, the ramparts provide some of the finest views across the ocean and surrounding coastline.
The Fish Souk: Head to the fish market to see a wide variety of fresh seafood brought directly from the port. You can also choose your fish and have it freshly grilled at one of the nearby stalls – a simple and popular Essaouira experience.
The Jewellery Souk: Explore the atmospheric souks of the Medina, where skilled local craftsmen create and sell traditional Moroccan jewellery and other handmade pieces.
